​Over the last 5 years, I've read through thousands of studies, articles, and books hunting for small actions that produce BIG results.

I WISH I would have had these strategies at my fingertips years ago. Even before I discovered the research, I used many of these "Action Skills" without realizing it.


If I had only known exactly what they were, how, and when to use them, I could have eliminated so much frustration and struggle.

Let me tell you what I mean:

Six years ago, I walked across the USA, alone, for charity.

Months into my journey, I found myself "stuck". Even then, the physical strain was still taking it's toll. Each day was a challenge to endure the pain of hiking 20 miles with 80 lbs of survival gear.

In a small town in Louisiana, I found my worst enemy: Comfort.

I was being hosted by a very relaxed friend. It was one of the few times I had comfort on my journey. I spent days relishing the relaxation and recovery time. I knew if I stopped for too long, I would never reach my goal: Seattle, Washington.

Every day that passed I knew I needed to get going, but the comfort of having an actual bed and the blistering Louisiana summer kept me thinking twice.


After days of guilt-ridden procrastination, my frustration reached a boiling point. I felt like I was letting laziness take over. I HAD to move on if I was ever to feel good about myself.


The day that I left, it was my self-directed anger that drove me back onto the road... except I decided to drop by a Pizza Hut on the way out of town.

After all, burning 8000 calories every day, I HAD to eat like a fat kid just to keep the pounds on! I spent 8 hours gorging myself on three whole extra-large pizzas and finding every excuse to not continue on.

Feeling disgustingly full, the time came to move on but it was now 11PM. The manager said, "You Don't Have To Go Home, But You Can't Stay Here."

By the force of circumstance and with a tinge of shame, I found myself alone on a dark country road in Louisiana.

Staring down at my immobile feet, I couldn't even imagine making it to the next mile marker, let alone another 20 miles to a safe place to camp. Each step was a monumental effort of willpower.

It was then that I asked myself a question that changed everything.

Somewhere in the depths of my brain I received an answer, and my right foot moved seemingly on it's own.


I asked again. A slightly louder answer came to my mind, and my left foot moved.


I kept asking that question until the answer changed. The answer didn't come from my mind, but from my body. My left leg moved forward, shook beneath me, and I collapsed onto the ground.

It was now 9:47 PM the next day, and I had no idea how far I had gone that day. I only knew that I had focused on that one question and it kept me moving.


When I looked at my tracker, it finally dawned on me that I had taken a 52-mile journey, one. step. at. a. time.

Almost 23 hours of strenuous physical exercise had passed. 106,000 steps with barely a thought of giving up or stopping.

In the days prior to that, I couldn't have imagined walking down a driveway. Let alone walking the equivalent of 2 marathons ​with ​half my bodyweight strapped to my back.

It didn't make sense how a single little question could transform me from being defeated, hoping for an extra moment of comfort, to a machine capable of super-human efforts.

I later learned why...

The Power Of Action Skills

Finding and asking that question lead me on a path to discover Action Skills. Simple actions that take very little time or effort to use, but change everything about how you ACT.

This sparked an obsession that drove me to reading thousands of scientific studies, articles and books, hunting for those small actions that produce BIG results. What I call "Action Skills".


Later on my journey, I realized how powerful this one Action Skill was. I was sitting outdoors at a cafe in Silicon Valley. As an entrepreneur from a small town in Florida, it was like I was in Hollywood.

The cafe was abuzz with entrepreneurs working on the next big idea, and meetings of founders, venture capitalists, and programmers. I felt out of place with my "walked here from Florida" t-shirt and big rucksack. 3600 miles into my journey, I was still traversing 100% on foot and doing small fundraisers.

A gentleman who was walking away from the counter came up to me and asked the first question most people asked me...

"Did you really walk here from Florida?"

We chatted about the journey, but as an entrepreneur, I was always fascinated with other people's business. We started talking about his business, and he began talking about how he was stuck.

He said:

"I've got 3 contracts and $60 million of funding waiting on a prototype, but I just can't bring myself to work.


A few months ago, I hit a roadblock, and I haven't been able to figure it out."

I told him the story I just told you. and I said:

"If you were to actually work on your prototype, what's the first thing you'd have to do?"

"Man, I wouldn't even know where to start."

"Sure you do. What's your first step? Before you can even think about the complicated stuff, walk through it in your mind. What will you be doing?"

"I'd have to take out my laptop."

"And then what?"

"I'd have to open my IDE, then get the project files loaded again...

I'd have to start hunting down that bug, and that is probably going to take hours."

"Well, let's back up a bit. You've got the project loaded. Could you find one line of code to improve? One line of code to write better?"

"Well, I guess I could."

I walked him through the process I accidently discovered in Louisiana. Then, I went to a separate table to finish up on my own work. Four hours later, as I was getting ready to leave, he ran up to me with a fiery enthusiasm.

"This was some of the best stuff I've done in months. Thank you so much!"

That's the moment that I realized how powerful that little question was.

It didn't work for just me, but it worked for other people too (and many people since).

This moment made me curious about why that worked, and how I could apply it to everything in my life. One deceptively simple question meant the difference between returning in shame, or transforming my journey. It meant the difference between another day of struggle, and the best work you've done in months.

We all want outcomes, be it walking 20 miles or raise another $100 million. What most often keeps us from getting the outcomes we want out of life is us, standing in our own way.


These action skills, like that question, and the ones I will share in the 14 day challenge get you out of your own way, and let you act like the person you really want to be.
